Virus disasters – 10 steps for prevention

• Use spam protection (ideally network level: see article)
• Do not allow browsing to websites known for spreading malware
• Enable a firewall (even if its just windows firewall) on all internal PCs
• Do not give administrator privileges to ordinary end users
• Do not allow end users to install software
• Keep PCs up to date with latest security patches for all software
• Limit the number of media brought into the organisation from external sources
• Install real time virus prevention and spyware protection software and make sure it remains up to date
• Virus scan all external media and email attachments even if its from reliable or trusted sources
• Use virtual machines for testing ‘suspect’ software on a separate or isolated network
